My 2 year old is going through the animal lover phase and is now learning all her animal names. Both her and I LOVE realistic pictures. I'm so tired of 99% kids products that contain ugly animal images that are also confusing ("no, sweetheart, I think it does look like a bunny but I think it's a cat.. maybe?"). These look just like the animals she saw in the zoo and she can immediately recognize them! She can name most animals from these pictures now. She is obsessed with this toy. We also purchased additional disks from manufacturer because her favorite animal is dog, and there was no dog with this set. It has help up OK so far, despite her abuse. She can use it all by herself (but I need to rotate the ring to set correct focus for her). It works best on white surfaces no further than 3-4 feet away, otherwise pictures appear too dim. Overall, an excellent toy. I wanted something engaging (but not overly stimulating) in darkness to use for bedtime and naptime when she resists going to bed, and it's worked beautifully so far. Bonus points is developing vocabulary and story telling (we pretend the dog runs across wall, the eagle flies etc).
