My daughter received it when she was 3 and at 5 she still loves it!It's not a laser beam so don't expect it to illuminate an already light-filled room. In a reasonably dark room at night it makes a very noticeable spectrum across a wall and / or ceiling. It purposely shuts off over time to conserve batteries so it's not meant to act as a true nightlight. No it's not a science toy -- it uses color LEDs to create the rainbow. And it definitely doesn't look like the manufacturer's photos -- the rainbow isn't suspended in air like a real rainbow. Well... maybe if you had a room full of water vapor.At one point recently I thought mine was broken as 3 of the 5 lights stopped illuminating. Though it was counter-intuitive to think this was a battery issue, I replaced the batteries and bingo -- good as new. We don't use ours excessively so the batteries have lasted 2 years. If you use yours a lot, get a universal AC adapter and go crazy.

Make a small rainbow by keeping the product closer to the wall, make a larger rainbow by, obviously, placing the product further from the surface you want it displayed. Can purchase an AC adapter to plug into wall, or use AAA batteries. The LEDs are bright- we had to keep telling the 5 year old who wanted to show it off to everyone, to be watchful of how she is holding the light so as not to shine it into anyone's eyes. To any kid OR adult who loves rainbows, this is such a cute idea. Small footprint, it can be easily set on a small night stand. There are two options in which the rainbow lights up: all at once, or one color at a time. Very cute. Several of the adults wanted to purchase one for themselves!

I bought this for my twins when they were almost 3--they are now 4 and this is still an every night necessity at bedtime. The two complaints I see are that the light isn't "bright" and that it uses too many batteries. I do NOT have those complaints. There are a couple of settings so if you set it correctly, it shuts off after about 15 minutes. That said, I change the TWO batteries about 4 times a year and if I changed them a little sooner, I would never see the less "bright" light. When the batteries are low, the light dims. This light goes on the walls and ceiling above both their heads and they love it. My 2 year old has gotten her hands on it a couple of times and it has not broken yet. If it did, I would replace it, for sure.Bottom line--buy GOOD batteries and when it starts to dim, if there are complaints, just change them. Seriously, it is not a big deal. And, don't forget to set it so it shuts off on its own after 15 mins.Very cute :-)

It WAS inexpensive, and if it were heavier I'm afraid it wouldn't be surviving at my house. My 2 yr old has thrown it a few times, and they carry it all over the house. They've taken off the "mirror", a mylar strip (so nothing that shatters), several times but I've put it back on. I may glue it. It's just held in by tabs on the ends. It could be considered a choking hazzard. My kids have also rubbed off some of the mirror, but it still works. I wouldn't consider this toy educational, though. It's just a cool LED nightlight basically. I still give this a 5 star rating, because I feel like we got what we paid for. My kids LOVE it, and I just realize nothing lasts forever around my house.

All my bulbs work even though I read others reviews who had faulty projectors, mine seems to do everything it should and I've left it on over night numerous times and still no fade or loss of bulbs. I've owned mine about a month now and I LOVE it.
