    I was not familiar with an egg topper and when it arrived was quite curious to see how it worked. We do eat many hard boiled eggs and may start eating soft boiled now. The "topper" only has one moving part, a spring loaded plunger. I couldn't see how this could impact an egg shell since there is nothing in the "cup" that covers the top part of the egg. Lo and behold, after lifting and releasing the plunger, the top of the egg cleanly came off in the cup! No other cracks or pieces of shell anywhere. Upon closer inspection, there is a slight ridge around the inside of the cup and the force of the plunger must push the cup down so the ridge cleanly cuts through the shell. You have to sue it to appreciate this clever device. If you eat hard or soft boiled eggs this device is a must have.

I have to slice the egg through with a knife--I use the bottom of the topper as a guide. I don't mind, however, because the topper I got that promised to do that job didn't even fit my eggs! This one does, and I really do like it. Once I've sliced the egg, the top part will fall out of the topper and back onto the egg, which I think keeps it a little warmer while I wrangle the rest of my breakfast.

After making a huge mess with a few soft boiled eggs, I decided to perfect my technique on hard boiled eggs. That’s what I suggest you do, too. Hold the topper on the egg and hold them both together firmly with one hand. Then pull the ball on the top all the way up and release quickly. Then twist to remove the shell top. Pro tip- the older your eggs, the better this tool works. Overall I love it.

I typically do it twice, then sort of rotate and pull to get it off. That creates a nice line on the egg that makes it easy to remove the top
