I would supervise children with it. I am sure that an electric arc that can light a candle would also burn skin. Better safe than sorry.     My wife has arthritis and has trouble with the usual "child proof" lighters. We tried a conventional lighter that you squeeze rather than push a button but it requires a pretty strong squeeze and it ran out of fuel quickly. This is very easy to use and we find it requires charging once every two weeks or so using once a day to light a candle or two. Charges quickly so it's no big deal. The only thing is that you need to be pretty precise lining up the wick between the two electrodes but it is something that you get used to pretty quick.
