it works wonders for the first 20 minutes or so. The water needs to seep through the filter cartridge because evaporating water in a (ideal) dry climate is the science behind air cooling. Until that happens, it's basically just a small box fan. I was under the impression that some reviewers tested it for 5 minutes, concluded it didn't work, and wrote their reviews. Give it at least 20 minutes and you will definitely notice that it pushes air out 8-10 degrees cooler than room temperature.

However, in a larger space, just remember that this is made to cool you while a few feet away from you, not at the opposite end of where you are. I just did a little test and you can feel the cool breeze from 8 feet away on the highest setting. Also, you probably won't notice much of an effect.
